Our deep love for the island of São Jorge, with its nearly 250 km² of pristine nature and status as a Natural Biosphere Reserve, inspired us to create Abrigo da Cascata. This unique place is surrounded by the waterfall that gave the project’s name. The traditional houses were carefully restored from their ruins, transforming into a cozy space designed to be not just a welcoming home, but also a starting point for adventures with friends or family.

A Recovered Fajã
The accommodation was created by restoring the ruins of a cluster of houses that once made up the Fajã do Cavalete, where two families lived: that of Mrs. Ermelinda do Cavalete and that of Mr. Bernardo. They both resided in the Fajã year-round, tending to their land and water mills.
According to locals, D. Ermelinda, affectionately known as the 'grandmother of Cavalete,' had a traditional oven where she baked bread and sweets for the Divine Holy Spirit festivities. Her home was always open to welcome neighbours, friends, and family to enjoy her delicious culinary delights.
Our accommodation arose from the ruins, preserving the welcoming spirit of the 'grandmother of Cavalete.' The architectural design was carefully crafted to maintain the authenticity of the fajã, while enhancing it with the comfort our guests deserve.
